EASTERN SUBURBS RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB
Easts players, coaches, volunteers and supporters – welcome to season 2009! Our club celebrated the 70th anniversary of our foundation by appearing in the 2008 First Grade Grand Final – our first appearance in the decider in 35 years. Despite losing 22-15 to a stronger Queanbeyan team, we celebrated long into the night and the next day, to acknowledge the performance of the team and the club as a whole.
We have come a long way in a few years. We realized that a strong rugby club has to function efficiently and effectively both on and off the field. We have been blessed over many years with a small group of hard working volunteers that sacrifice their time and efforts to ensure that Easts players have the resources and a supportive environment to allow them to perform on the field. However the 2009 season will see some of these volunteers move on to more restful pastures, requiring others to fill the gaps left by these legends. We look to our Old Boys Association to fill these gaps!
The 2009 season also sees a changing of the guard within the coaching ranks with the appointment of new Head Coach Mark Seymour. Mark is a New Zealander with tremendous playing and coaching experience. Mark has acted as Resource Coach (Midfield Backs) for the New Zealand under 19 & 21 teams as well as having coaching stints at various levels with Northland & Southland Provinces. Mark will manage a coaching staff including Neil Roberts, Julio Caggiano, Tim O’Brien and Gordon Scott. Club Conditioner Dan Kite and Physio Maeve O’Brien will provide the entire coaching staff with their professional skills within their areas of responsibility.
On the playing side of the equation we have undergone significant changes, especially within the 2008 First Grade squad. We have lost almost our whole backline to player retirements, rugby league, club changes and an overseas player returning home. However these situations present challenges and opportunities to both the club and individual players. The Board has been successful in attracting several suitably qualified players to play for our club in 2009 as well as ensuring that players within the local rugby community know that they can achieve success at Easts based upon their training effort and on-field performance. On top of this we have a number of young players who will relish the opportunity to challenge for a First Grade position under Head Coach Mark Seymour’s tutelage.
The 2009 season will see the unveiling of several new jumper sponsors to join the quality sponsorship team headed by Major Sponsor Fyshwick Self Storage and First Grade Jumper Sponsors Binutti Constructions and Schiavello (ACT) Pty Ltd. MaximusSolutions, Engineering Services Coordination and AEC Consulting Engineers will adorn our Second Grade and Colts jumpers for the next two seasons. Our club will also receive support from our Silver and Bronze package sponsors, to ensure we represent a diverse but vibrant group within the Canberra and district business community.
2009 will also see the unveiling of the new pavilion at Jerrabomberra Oval, kindly provided by Sport & Recreation Services on behalf of the ACT government. This pavilion will provide Easts with a quality training facility at our training ground. We will retain the use of Griffith Oval for all Easts home games.
Finally I urge all Old Boys and friends of Easts to join us on game days at Griffith Oval, to celebrate the game of rugby and the spirit of the young men on both ends of the field.
On behalf of the Coaching Staff of the East’s Rugby Club I offer you a warm welcome to the 2009 Rugby season.
The 2009 season will offer the East’s Club great challenges and also great opportunities for all involved to achieve their individual and collectives goals, both on and off the field.
After the success of the 2008 First Grade team in reaching the Grand Final, it is important that as a club, success is not taken for granted and we not rest on our laurels.
As a club; and as individual teams we must continue to work hard (and smart), be dedicated and determined in the pursuit of excellence, whilst at the same time continuing to enjoy the challenges and grow the friendships which are an integral part of the success of any sporting environment.
As a coaching staff, we look forward to working with you throughout the 2009 season, enjoying your company and assisting you in achieving your goals, at whatever level you may be involved in with in the club.
The concept of Easts Old Boys (EOB) is to help keep alive the spirit of our playing days at Easts and more importantly, keep our football days friendships going through those long years in the ‘retirement paddock’.
Anyone who has played, or is playing needs to be part of the EOB community. Through business, education and social activities, the EOB’s are committed to ensuring the Easts legacy lives on and that all legends through the ages are carried and grow in statute.
The 2009 EOB committee is: John Mawson, Gunther Ploy, Tubby Tamer, Cods Goodall
